Tamarindo guide
Getting to Tamarindo from Liberia airport (LIR)
Drive time, private transfers with a grocery stop, shuttles and rental cars
The last leg of any trip is the one everyone’s too tired for. You’ve been up since dawn, the kids are hungry, and the one thing you want is to stop moving and get in the water. So here’s how we make the trip from the airport to Tamarindo as painless as possible.
We’re Matt and Erin, and our family owns Casa Colorado, a vacation home a 4-minute walk from Playa Tamarindo. We’ve made this drive more times than we can count.
Which airport should you fly into?
Fly into Liberia (LIR) if you can. Liberia is the closest international airport to Tamarindo, and the drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
San José (SJO) is the main airport for the country and sometimes has better flight options, but it’s about 4.5 to 5 hours from Tamarindo by road. With kids, after a full day of flying, that’s a lot. If you land in San José, our advice is simple: book a short connecting flight to Liberia rather than making the drive.
| Liberia (LIR) | San José (SJO) | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to Tamarindo | About 1 h 15 min | About 4.5 to 5 h |
| Best for | Almost everyone heading to Tamarindo | Travelers combining Tamarindo with the rest of Costa Rica |
Your options from Liberia to Tamarindo
1. A private transfer (our favorite with a group)
For families and groups, a private transfer is the easiest way to go. A driver meets you, the whole group rides together, and nobody has to navigate on their first day in a new country.
If you’re staying at Casa Colorado, you can book our private airport shuttle online for your group. Even better, they can stop at a large supermarket on the way, so you arrive stocked up and never have to leave the pool that first evening. Our private airport shuttle is US$125 each way for up to 6 people and US$200 for 7 to 12, paid to the driver in cash, and booking about a week ahead is plenty.
2. A shared shuttle
Shared shuttles run between Liberia airport and Tamarindo and can work well for couples and smaller groups on a budget. You trade a little flexibility for a lower price. Our family blog has a full guide to the shuttle service options to Tamarindo.
3. Renting a car
A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore well beyond Tamarindo with day trips around Guanacaste. Read up on insurance and pick-up before you go. Our family blog covers it in renting a car in Costa Rica.
Do you need a car in Tamarindo itself? Not really, at least not at Casa Colorado. From the house you can walk to the beach and to plenty of restaurants and shops. Super Pura Vida, the closest grocery store, is about 200 meters away. Tour operators pick you up at the house. If someone in your group needs help getting around, the property managers can arrange a golf cart rental.

Tips for the drive
- Plan a grocery stop. The biggest supermarket in town, Auto Mercado, is on the north side of Tamarindo, past the estuary. Shopping on the way in saves a separate taxi trip later. Our Tamarindo grocery stores guide has the full rundown.
- Have some cash ready. US dollars are widely accepted, and tipping is very common in Tamarindo. See our money, ATMs and tipping guide.
- Think about your landing time. It gets dark early in Costa Rica all year, so an afternoon landing can mean the last part of the drive is at night. With a private driver that’s no problem. With a rental car on your first day, we’d rather you arrive in daylight.
Arriving at Casa Colorado
Check-in is at 3 pm and check-out is at 11 am. Casa Colorado is listed as “Casa Colorado” on Google Maps and Apple Maps.
The house sits behind walls on all sides with a gated, secure driveway, and the doors use keypad entry. RPM Vacation Rentals provides your entry details, and their contact information comes with your booking confirmation, so there’s no key handoff to coordinate after a long travel day.
Then the good part. Drop the bags, find the rope swing (the only private pool rope swing in Tamarindo), and walk the 4 minutes to Playa Tamarindo in time for sunset. Fiber internet (350+ Mbps) means anyone who has to send one last email can do it quickly and get back outside.
If your flight is late, don’t panic: your driver will wait for you. There can be a small extra charge, depending on how long the wait is.
Stay a 4-minute walk from the beach
Casa Colorado sleeps 12 (main house 9, casita 3) in 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, with a private pool inside a walled and gated yard. Rates are from US$506 per night plus 13% tax, varying by season. No pets. Check dates and see your price, and see our FAQ for everything else.
