Vacation Rental vs. Hotel in Tamarindo: What a Group Actually Pays

We priced three real weeks, including Christmas, at Casa Colorado and at hotels in Tamarindo. Here is the honest math.

If you are bringing a group, the first question is often “rental or hotel?” So we priced it. On October 14, 2026, we looked up the same three weeks at Casa Colorado and at well-reviewed hotels in Tamarindo, for a family of four per hotel room. Here is the honest math for a group of 12 (three families).

A dry-season week (February 6 to 13, 2027)

Casa Colorado Popular 4-star resort in town
Rooms for 12 The whole house: 4 bedrooms, casita, pool 3 rooms
Price for the week about $5,229, tax and cleaning included about $7,458 (3 rooms at about $2,486 each, before any taxes or resort fees)
Per person per night about $62 about $89

A green-season week (May 8 to 15, 2027)

Casa Colorado Popular 4-star resort in town
Price for the week about $3,805, tax and cleaning included about $5,949 (3 rooms at about $1,983 each, before any taxes or resort fees)
Per person per night about $45 about $71

Hotel prices are what a major travel search site showed for a room for 2 adults and 2 kids on those dates. They change daily and may not include taxes and fees. Casa Colorado prices come from our booking calendar and include tax, cleaning and the 10% weekly discount. Check your own dates.

Christmas week, the high season (December 19 to 26, 2026)

This is where the math gets interesting, because holiday week is less about price and more about whether you can get a room in town at all. When we searched, the popular resorts in the middle of Tamarindo did not come up with rooms for a family of four. The 4-star rooms we could find were 4 to 5 miles outside town.

Casa Colorado 4-star hotels outside town Beachfront condos in town
What 12 people need The whole house 3 rooms 3 condos
Price for the week about $6,981, tax and cleaning included about $5,940 to $6,468 (about $1,980 to $2,156 a room, before taxes and fees) about $11,490 (about $3,830 each)
Per person per night about $83 about $71 to $77 about $137
Walk to the beach? Yes, 5 minutes No, a drive or a taxi each way Yes

So at Christmas, a hotel outside town can come in a little cheaper per night on paper. Add a rental car or taxis for every beach day and dinner, three rooms in a hallway instead of one house, and no kitchen for the Christmas dinner, and it stops looking like a deal. In town, the beachfront condos that were still open cost well over half again as much as the whole of Casa Colorado.

Holiday weeks book first and have longer minimum stays. The booking calendar shows the exact holiday price for your dates, so check yours before you decide.

What the numbers leave out

Food

Casa Colorado has a full kitchen and a gas grill, so breakfasts and a few dinners at home cut the food bill for a group a lot. Hotel rooms mostly mean eating out three times a day.

Space

Three hotel rooms down a hallway versus a house with a great room, a covered patio, a private pool and a separate casita. With kids, the evenings are the difference: the adults sit on the patio while the kids sleep down the hall.

Together, not next door

A group in one house eats together, swims together and does not have to text to find each other. And nobody has to share the pool with strangers.

Where hotels win

For a couple or a short stay, a hotel is often the simpler choice: daily housekeeping, a restaurant downstairs and no kitchen to clean. Casa Colorado has housekeeping up to three times a week. A rental shines for families and groups of 6 or more staying several nights.

So which should you book?

Here is how we would decide, after a lot of years of watching families do both.

  • Book a hotel if you are two people, staying two or three nights, and you want a restaurant downstairs and someone else making the bed every day.
  • Book a rental if you are a family or a group of 6 or more, staying 5 nights or longer, and you want to be together: one kitchen, one pool, one long table at dinner.
  • In dry season and green season, the rental is clearly cheaper per person for a group, before you even count the meals you cook at home.
  • At Christmas and New Year, the real question is location. Hotels in town fill up, and the ones with rooms tend to be a drive from the beach. A walkable house in town is worth more that week, not less.

We are biased, of course. It is our house. But we priced the hotels honestly, and we would tell you if the numbers came out the other way. For a group, they rarely do. Price your dates, or read who sleeps where to see how your group fits.

FAQ

Is a vacation rental cheaper than a hotel in Tamarindo?

For groups, usually yes. In our comparison, a group of 12 at Casa Colorado paid about $45 to $62 per person per night including tax in green and dry season, against about $71 to $89 per person for three rooms at a popular 4-star resort in town, before the resort’s taxes and fees. At Christmas, hotels in town were mostly full, and the 4-star rooms we found outside town came out a little cheaper per night but a drive from the beach.

Is it hard to find a hotel in Tamarindo at Christmas?

It can be. When we searched for Christmas week, the popular resorts in the middle of town did not show rooms for a family of four. Book holiday weeks early, whatever you choose.

How many people does Casa Colorado sleep?

Up to 12: nine in the main house and three in the casita.
